UAN or the Universal Account Number is given to every EPF account holder. Since a single person can change multiple organisations and every organisation is required to open a new PF account for the new employee, remembering all the PF account numbers can be a hectic process. Therefore, UAN was introduced for storing different EPF account numbers of a single employee under a single Universal Account Number that acts as an umbrella and all the details of different account numbers are maintained in one place.
The Employee Provident Fund of India allows employees to give their UAN number to their new employer so that they can connect their new PF account to their UAN account. In this guide, we will be discussing the registration and activation process of UAN.
The EPFO allots a unique 12-digit number, known as the UAN number, to all the employees who are contributing to EPF. The UAN number provided to the employee remains the same throughout his life, no matter how many job switches he has made. The EPFO provides a new member identification number (ID) to the employee when he changes his job which is then linked to his UAN. This new member ID request is initiated by the employer for which the employee needs to communicate his UAN number to the new employer. The member ID is created first and then linked to the UAN of the employee. This makes it easy for employees to manage their PF accounts and can run the process of transfers and withdrawals smoothly.
