The EPFO allots a unique 12-digit number, known as the UAN number, to all the employees who are contributing to EPF. The UAN number provided to the employee remains the same throughout his life, no matter how many job switches he has made. The EPFO provides a new member identification number (ID) to the employee when he changes his job which is then linked to his UAN. This new member ID request is initiated by the employer for which the employee needs to communicate his UAN number to the new employer. The member ID is created first and then linked to the UAN of the employee. This makes it easy for employees to manage their PF accounts and can run the process of transfers and withdrawals smoothly.
Only having a UAN number or an account is not enough. If you want to avail the benefits of UAN, you will have to activate your UAN number. You can activate your UAN number on the unified EPFO portal as per the step-by-step process given below.
After your UAN is activated, you will receive a password on your registered mobile number which will be used for accessing your UAN account.
You can also activate your UAN account through an app that the EPFO launched in 2015 to enable accessing EPFO information on the go. To activate your UAN, you are required to download ‘Umang’ (2), the app, and then enter your UAN login credentials along with your mobile number.
