Process to Reset Password on ITD Website

In this digital world, all of us are expected to remember passwords of our accounts on social media or the important ones like bank account, LIC or EPF accounts, account on ITD website etc. When it comes to the password of ITD account, most of us have difficulty to remember as the Income Tax Return is filed only once in a year.

Ways to Reset the Password

Through the ‘Login Id’ remains your PAN Number, the challenge is remembering the unique password set by you. Now there is nothing to worry in case you forgot your login password can be re-set through the below methods:

  • Through the Income Tax Department website
  • By sending an email to the Income Tax Department with specific details

In case if you ever forget the password of your account on the ITD website, you can still access your account easily and securely using one of the five methods available to reset your password.

Password Reset through ITD Website

Registered user can reset the password from the ITD website using one of the following options:

  • Answer Secret Question
  • Upload Digital Signature Certificate
  • Using e-Filing OTP
  • Using Aadhar OTP
  • e-Filing login through Net Banking

Following 3 steps will remain the same for all password reset options as below:

Step 1: On the ITD Home Page, click on the “Reset” option as shown in the screenshot below (1)

Step 2: Provide the “User Id” which is your PAN number

Step 3: Enter the “Captcha Code” to click on “Continue” to proceed further

Answer Secret Question

To Reset Password using the “Answer Secret Question” option, the steps are as below:

Steps 1 to 3 remain the same for all methods

Step 4: Select “Answer Secret Question” from the drop-down menu and click on “Continue” tab.

Step 5: Enter the “Date of Birth” using the calendar provided. Select the “Secret Question” from the drop-down menu. Enter the “Secret Answer” and Click on “Submit” button.

Step 6: On successfully entering all details, the user must enter the New Password and confirm the password. Click on “Submit”. Once the password has been changed, a success message will be displayed. The user can log in with the new password.

Upload Digital Signature Certificate

To Reset Password using the “Upload Digital Signature Certificate” option, the steps are as follows:

Steps 1 to 3 remain the same for all methods

Step 4: Follow the first four steps mentioned under “Method 1”. In the following page select “Upload Digital Signature Certificate” from the drop-down menu and click on “Continue” tab as shown below.

Step 5: Select any one of the two options available in the drop-down menu, i.e., “New DSC” or “Registered DSC”. If you have a registered signature file, then you can choose “Registered DSC” option and simply upload it. However, if you choose “New DSC” option then you need to follow the following steps:

  • Download the “ITD e-Filing DSC Management Utility”.
  • Generate the signature file.
  • Follow the instructions in the utility.
  • Attach the generated signature file.

Step 6: After uploading DSC and clicking on the “Validate” button, the DSC is validated.

Step 7: Write down the new password you want to set in the empty boxes provided as marked in the image below and click on “Submit” button.

Using e-Filing OTP

To Reset Password using the “Using OTP (PINs)” option, the steps are as follows:

Steps 1 to 3 remain the same for all methods (need to give a hyperlink to go through 1-3 steps

Step 4: Select “Using OTP (PINs)” from the drop-down menu and click on “Continue” tab.

Step 5: If you have access to your registered email ID and mobile number then you can simply choose “Registered Email ID and Mobile Number “option and click on “Validate”.

If you do not have access to any one of them then you can choose the second option “New Email ID and Mobile Number”.

Below is the screen that appears to provide your “New Email ID and Mobile Number”

If “TDS/TCS Deduction Details” is selected, then enter the TAN of the Deductor, Assessment Year and Total Tax Deducted as shown in the screen below:

Step 6: If you choose “Bank Account No.” then you will be asked to provide your bank account number only.


Once you have filled all the relevant details, you can click on “Validate”.

Step 7: On successfully entering all details, the user must enter the ‘New Password’ and confirm the password. Click on “Submit”. Once the password has been changed, a success message will be displayed. The user can log in with the new password.

One important point to note is that when the option “New Email ID and Mobile Number” is selected, then the User should wait for 12hrs to access the ITD portal. This is to ensure that there is no misuse or fraudulent activity with the tax payer’s account as part of a safety measure taken by the Income Tax Department.

Using Aadhar OTP

Steps 1 to 3 remain the same for all methods

Step 4: Select “Using Aadhaar OTP” option from the drop-down menu and select “Continue” tab as shown below.

Step 5: If your Aadhaar number is linked to your account, you will see the options “I already have Aadhaar OTP” or “Generate Aadhaar OTP”. Click on “Generate Aadhar OTP”. It will send the OTP to your Mobile Number registered with Aadhaar.

Step 6: Enter the Aadhaar OTP in the highlighted box which you received in your mobile phone and click on “Validate” button to reset your password (OTP valid for 30 minutes).

Step 7: On success, the user must enter the New Password and confirm the password. Click on “Submit”. Once the password has been changed, a success message will be displayed. User can log in with the new password.

e-Filing Login Through Net Banking

Registered Taxpayer can log in through Net Banking and reset the password to avail the e-filing services on ITD web site. Net Banking Login: To Reset Password using the ‘Net Banking Login’, the steps are as follows:

Step 4: Click on “e-Filing Login Through Net Banking” link.

 

Step 5: Select the bank from the list of banks providing the e-Filing login facility.

Step 6: After you log in to Net Banking account of your relevant bank account, click on “Income Tax e-Filing/Login to e-Filing account” or any relevant option as per the bank web site terminology.

Step 7: Once you confirm the PAN Number, Bank Account details etc, the page will be re-directed to your account on the Income Tax Department. Ensure the option – ‘Always allow pop-ups’ on the right top corner of your screen is selected here.

Step 8: Taxpayer can select “Change Password” under profile settings to enter “New Password” and “Confirm” the same. Click on “Submit” tab. The user can avail all the e-Filing services along with managing his profile.

Password Reset through E-mail to ITD

Here is one more option to reset the password in case a User is not able to do so with the above options. He can send an e-mail request to the Income Tax Department to re-set his account password by providing the details as below:

  • PAN Number
  • Name of the PAN Holder
  • Date of Birth as per PAN Card
  • Father’s Name as per PAN Card
  • Mailing Address

The Income Tax Department would revert in 48hrs and the User can reset his account password to continue using the e-filing services.

A Registered User can re-set his ITD account password from Income Tax Department website through 5 easy ways like – Answer Secret Question, Upload Digital Signature Certificate, Using e-Filing OTP, Using Aadhar OTP, e-Filing login through Net Banking option.

Secondly, in case, he is unable to do so through the above methods, the Registered taxpayer can send an email request to the Income Tax Department with certain details as discussed from his email id to receive a revert in 48hrs. The Income Tax Department has also come up with a process where Visually Challenged Users can request for OTP instead of Captcha while trying to reset their account by clicking on “forgot password” option.

For all the above ways followed to reset the password, a success message will be displayed on the screen. The user can then log in to his ITD account with the new password.
