13 Reasons Why You Haven’t Received Your Income Tax Refund Yet

When your tax liability is less than the taxes paid, a tax refund is issued.  Sometimes, the refund due to you can get delayed for several reasons.  If you are worried that you haven’t yet received your income tax refunds, then this guide will provide you with the reasons why your tax refund has been delayed.


Check your ITR Status

Missed checking your income tax refund status on the income tax website. Kindly follow the below mentioned procedure to check your income tax refund status on the Income tax department website.

  1. Open the Income Tax India efiling website in your browser (1)
  2. Enter your PAN number
  3. Enter the Acknowledgement number of the Return filed.
  4. Enter the Captcha Code showed on the screen
  5. Submit

Reasons Why Your Refund is Delayed

If  you haven’t received your tax refund yet, then the following could be the reasons for the delay:

1.  No return filed for the requested assessment year

You might have not filed your income tax returns for the assessment year for which you are expecting a tax refund. You either physically/ manually filed your income tax returns.  Manually filed returns are not qualified for refunds since FY 2014-2015.

2.  Incomplete verification of your return filed.

After filing of the income tax return you had to either send the signed ITR-V copy to CPC Bangalore or do the E-verification process within 120 days of e-filing.

3.  Kindly bear the time as your refund is still being processed.

Your ITRV must have arrived at CPC to get processed by the income tax department or you must have e-verified your income tax returns recently.

4.  Refund is determined and sent to the refund banker.

This means that your income tax return has processed your return and refund is determined. The refund is sent to the refund banker for processing and you don’t have to worry as you will soon receive your income tax refund.

5.  Refund failed due to incorrect bank account details.

This means that your income tax refund has failed due to the incorrect bank account details. You can then apply online for a refund re-issue request with the income tax department with the correct bank account details to claim the refund.

6.  Communication address not updated to the IT Department.

The provided communication address by you is wrong, therefore you might have not yet received with your income tax refund. You can always update your current address on income tax website to claim your income tax refund back.

7.  There was no refund requested while filing of your income tax return.

You either might have missed claiming any deductions or exemptions while filing of your income tax returns or there was no refund for the financial year for which you filed.

8.  Refund adjusted with your previous outstanding demand.

This states that your return is processed and the income tax refund of the current year is adjusted with the outstanding demand of the previous year. You might have already received the communication on your email from the It department from Donotreply@incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in. 9.  The Income Tax Department states there is an outstanding demand due to incorrect filing of return.

10.  Income tax department has requested to submit additional information for clarification.

This states that your income tax return is processed with the It department and they have asked you to submit your supporting documents for the proposed income while filing of your income tax returns.

11.  Defective return filed by you.

The income tax return filed by you is treated as the Defective Return. You can check the status of your defective return on the income tax portal/ website.

12.  Processing rights of your return is transferred to the Assessing Officer.

This states that the further processing rights of your income tax return is transferred to the Assessing Officer. On such intimation from the It department you can contact the Jurisdictional Assessing Officer.

Yes, you can revise file your tax returns to claim your missed exemptions or deductions.

You can login on to the It department website and,
•    Click on My Account
•    Select Refund Reissue Request
•    Provide the correct bank account or the update communication address

Alternatively, you can check your Refund Re-issue Request in 2- 3 weeks of the request raised.

4.  In which bank account will my refund get credited?

The income tax refund will be credited in the primary bank account provided, while filing of your income tax refund.

5. I have recently shifted to a new place, how to update my new address?

Once you logged in on the e-filing portal, you can click on Profile wherein you can edit your new address.
