We have all been through the instances where we had to link certain documents to complete a process. We have to link our e-Mail account or our phone number even for accessing something as simple as Facebook. This is done usually to make sure that you don’t have multiple facebook accounts linked to a single e-Mail account or a phone number. Similarly, the CBDT has made it mandatory for people, irrespective of whether they file their taxes or not, to link aadhaar to pan card.
Though mandatory, a lot of you may not know how to link PAN with Aadhaar through the official e-filing portal. In this guide by H&R Block, the whole process of linking both the cards has been explained in detail.
The government has recently made it mandatory for people to link their Aadhaar number with their PAN for filing income taxes. To link both the cards, an individual taxpayer while first have to register himself on the Income Tax website. Once he has registered, he will be required to follow the below mentioned steps to link the two IDs.
A pop-up message displaying ‘Aadhaar-PAN linking has been completed successfully’ will come up on the screen.
The Income Tax Department has announced an easy way out for taxpayers so that you can link your PAN card with your Aadhaar card using an SMS based process. The format of the SMS which you can use to link your Aadhaar with PAN is explained as follows:
Type UIDPAN <12-digit Aadhaar number> <10-digit PAN> and send the SMS to 56161 or 567678
For Example UIDPAN 645574484390 ASDDP2408N
You can also feed your Aadhaar details in the PAN database by mentioning the same in the application to get an allotment for the new PAN or by adding the details in the request to change while requesting to reprint the PAN card. The linking will be completed once the UIDAI verifies the data.
The Income Tax Department has started an online facility that allows you to correct the errors in the name as well as any other information mentioned on the Aadhaar document and PAN card. The IT Department had already launched the online facility for linking the two cards with ease and now it has added two hyperlinks for e-filing your tax returns on the official website. While one link will take you to the application page of the PAN card by the citizen or a foreigner, the other link will take you to the page where you can update or correct all the important details. You can easily log in to the Aadhaar Self Service Update Portal (SSUP) and update all the details. You can also upload all the scanned documents that are required as proof of data update request.
Since both the PAN as well as the Aadhaar Card are cards with a unique identification, they are used as a proof of identity which is necessary for different registration and verification purposes.
The government has made it mandatory for all the entities to link their PAN cards with their respective Aadhaar cards for the following reasons.

With the government making Aadhaar card necessary for applying for a PAN Card, NRIs were confused if they had to apply for an Aadhaar card as well. However, the UIDAI has quoted that if you are an NRI and you haven’t stayed in the country for a period of 182 days or more in the last 12 months, you do not need Aadhaar card to avail your PAN Card. Also, applying for a PAN Card online is not applicable for NRIs and you will have to take the offline method of applying for the same.
It is advisable that you apply for an Aadhaar card and get it linked to your PAN to ensure that your PAN is valid. Also, since Aadhaar has become necessary for availing most of the benefits provided by the government it is always better to get an Aadhaar card for yourself.
