duplicate pan card

You want to file your taxes, and you need your PAN card so that you can add in the PAN number for logging into the Income Tax e-Filing portal. You look into your wallet, but your card isn’t in there. You check your drawer where you keep all your important papers and documents, but you cannot find your card in there too. You go around the house searching for your PAN card with the realisation slowly sinking in that maybe you have lost it. You panic! What do you do now? How are you going to file your taxes now or ever?

Relax! You can apply for a duplicate PAN card easily, within the confines of your home. In this comprehensive guide, we will be learning about when and how to apply for a duplicate PAN card.

Why having a PAN Card is Important?

All of us already know the importance of a PAN card. People, especially taxpayers, who did not own a PAN card have applied for it ever since it has been made mandatory by the Income Tax Department. The purpose of a PAN card is to keep a tab on the financial transactions of an individual and thus ensuring that they are tax compliant.

Given its importance and its portability, many of us carry our PAN card with us because you never know when a certain situation arises where you are required to provide your PAN details or simply need to produce a proof of your identity.

When to Apply for Duplicate PAN Card?

Apart from the good things that happen when you carry your PAN card with you there also lies a fact that you also expose your card to the risk of damage, theft or loss. There are plenty of reasons where you, as an individual, trust or a company, will need to apply for a duplicate PAN card. The most common instances for applying for a duplicate card are given below.

Loss or Theft: This is one of the most common and major reasons contributing to the application of a duplicate PAN card. Given the fact that most of us carry the card on us, mostly in the wallet, you are liable to lose it in case of a theft of your wallet.

Damaged: There are plenty of ways where a PAN card can get damaged leaving you with no other option than to get a duplicate one.

Misplaced: We often misplace our cards not remembering the last place we had left them. You can apply for a duplicate PAN card on such occasion.

Change of Information: There is a possibility that there is an error in your PAN card data and you realise it after you have received your card. In this case, you can apply for a duplicate PAN card.

Keeping these possibilities in mind, the government has taken apt measures to make sure that you get a duplicate PAN card without any hassle.

If you have selected ‘Apply Online’, you need to select the third option, that is ‘Changes or correction in existing PAN Data/Reprint of PAN Card (No changes in existing PAN Data)’ under the ‘Application Type’ head. Select the relevant Category and fill in all the details.

Step 3: After entering all the details, check them to make sure that you have added the correct information and that there is no mistake. If you find a mistake click on ‘Reset’ and enter the correct details, if not click on ‘Submit’.

Step 4: If you have selected ‘Registered User’, you will have to enter the ‘Temporary Token Number’, your E-mail ID and your ‘Date of Birth’. Enter the captcha code shown on the screen in the filed given and click on ‘Submit’. If you haven’t received the token, you can click on the ‘Resent Token’ button and then enter the information.

In case of the Aadhaar e-Sign, you will have to upload a scanned copy of your Aadhaar card.

If an error occurs, it will be displayed on your screen, which you will have to rectify and re-submit the application form. If there are no errors, a confirmation screen will be displayed with all the data that you have filled.
