Form 26AS is an annual statement of total taxes paid by you to the government every year under section 203AA of Income Tax Act 1961. It reflects your tax credit details (TDS/ TCS, Advance Tax/ Self-assessment Tax) from multiple income sources like salary, pension and interest etc. against your PAN number.
Hence, Form 26AS is also known as the Tax Credit Statement. In this guide by H&R Block, we are going to discuss its importance, and the process to view and download it online.
Being a registered PAN holder, you can view it in two different ways:

SIDE NOTE: Due to the recent changes made by the Income Tax Department, you don’t need a password anymore to open your Form 26AS.
The only way to view your Tax Credit Statement without registering on the Income Tax portal is through your Net Banking account.
SIDE NOTE: Your PAN card should be linked to your online bank account to access Form 26AS.

A. Form 26AS is important because it helps you verify whether the government has received the TDS deducted from your income or Advance Tax paid by you or not. Hence, it is recommended to refer to Form 26AS before filing your tax return.
A. The Income Tax Department of India issues your Form 26AS.
A. You don’t need a password anymore to open your Form 26AS. Earlier, the password required to open Form 26AS was in the following format: DDMMYYYY – Which is your date of birth as mentioned in your PAN card.
A. You may face this problem because your TDS deductor did not file the TDS return. Hence, you must request him to do so.
A. The details of tax paid will reflect within 1 to 2 weeks of making the payment.
A. If there is an error in the entries related to TDS, you should approach the respective deductor (which is your employer or the bank in most cases) to file a correction statement. In case of error in the entries related to Self-assessment or Advance Tax payment, you should get help from your jurisdictional assessing officer.
Form 26AS contains all the tax-related information reflecting against your PAN number as per the database of the Income Tax Department. Hence, it serves as an important document which helps you in verifying the tax credit details at the time of filing your tax return.
A slight mismatch between the information in the form and your declarations in the ITR may lead to a discrepancy. So, always refer to the Form 26AS while filing your return.
