Once you have successfully filed your income tax return, you need to verify your income tax return. Without completing verification of your ITR, your ITR will not be processed by the Income Tax department. Post filing your ITR, you get 120 days to verify it.

There are two ways to verify Income Tax Return:


1) Download, print and send ITR-V to CPC for physical verification


2) Online verification of ITR-V through generation of EVC



1) Send ITR-V to CPC


If you choose to physically verify your ITR, you can do so by downloading, printing, signing the copy of ITR-V and sending the signed copy to CPC Bangalore.

2) E-verification of ITR-V through EVC

There are 6 different ways in which you can e-verify your ITR at the Income Tax department’s e-filing portal. For every method, you need to generate an EVC or Electronic Verification Code. This code is used to verify your tax return online.

A) E-verify ITR by Generating EVC using Email ID and Mobile Number

This method of e-verifying ITR can only be used if a taxpayer satisfies the following criteria:

  • Your income is below Rs. 5,00,000
  • You do not have a refund

If you satisfy both the criteria then you can generate an EVC directly on the government’s e-filing website which will be delivered on your mobile number and email id.

Here is how you can do this by following a few simple steps:

Step 1:

Click here to visit ITD’s e-filing website.

Step 2:

Find

“Login Here”

button on the top right corner and click on it to login to your account. If you do not have an account, you can click on

“Register Yourself”

button present just above

After clicking on

“Login Here”

, provide your

“User ID”

(i.e. your PAN card number) and

“Password”

along with the

“Captcha Code”

Select

“View Returns / Forms”

tab.

On the following screen please select

“Click here to view your returns pending for e-verification”

tab to view all the returns that are pending for verification.

Step 6:

Once you get a list of returns pending for e-verification, you have to click on the

“e-Verify”

button in order to e-verify your ITR.

Step 7:

Here you need to select

“Option 2 - I do not have an EVC and I would like to generate EVC to e-Verify my return”

tab.

Step 8:

Select the second option named

“EVC – To Registered Email Id and Mobile Number”

on the pop-up screen. After this, you will receive EVC on your registered mobile number and e-mail id.

Note:

This method of generating EVC will only work if you have income over

5,00,000 & do not have a refund.

In any other case, you should use other methods to generate EVC.

Register Email ID and Phone Number

Step 9:

Verify your ITR by keying in the 10 digit alpha numeric EVC in the space provided and press

“Submit”

button.

You have successfully completed e-verification of your ITR.

B) E-verify ITR by Generating EVC Using Aadhaar Card

In this method, you can generate EVC & get it on your registered mobile number if your PAN is linked with Aadhaar database.

Follow the steps given below to e-verify ITR using this method:

Step 2:

Find

“Login Here”

button on the top right corner and click on it to login to your account. If you do not have an account, you can click on

“Register Yourself”

Step 3:

After clicking on

“Login Here”

, provide your

“User ID”

(i.e. your PAN card number) and

“Password”

along with

“Captcha Code”

in the blanks provided in the following page and click on

“Login”

Step 4(A):

If you have not linked your Aadhaar card to your PAN card a screen pops-up to promt you to link your Aadhaar card to your PAN card. The page displays a guide which will help you in the linking process. Follow the guide to link your Aadhaar card to your PAN card. You can click on

“LATER”

button if you want to do this later.

Step 4(B):

You can complete this task at any time by going to your

“Profile Settings”

and choosing

“Link Aadhaar”

in the drop down menu.

Step 5:

Once your Aadhaar card has been linked to your PAN card, you can proceed to e-verify your ITR using your Aadhaar card. On the

“Dashboard”

, click on

“My Account”

and choose

“e-Filed Returns/Forms”

from the drop down menu.

Step 6:

On the following screen please select

“Click here to view your returns pending for e-verification”

tab to view all the returns that are pending for verification.

Step 7:

Once you get a list of returns pending for e-verification, you have to click on the

“e-Verify”

button in order to e-verify your ITR.

Aadhaar OTP to e-Verify IT Return

Step 8:

Here you need to select

“Option 3 – I would like to generate Aadhaar OTP to e-Verify my return”

tab. Once this is done, you will get an OTP on your registered mobile number.

Step 9:

Write down the OTP in the blank space provided on the page and proceed.

Congratulations!

You have successfully completed e-verification of your ITR.

C) Online Verification of ITR by Generating EVC Using Net Banking

You can e-verify your Income Tax Return using the net banking option.

Here is how you can do this by following a few simple steps:

Step 1:

button on the top right corner and click on it to login to your account. If you do not have an account, you can click on

“Register Yourself”

button in order to e-verify your ITR.

Select the first option named

“EVC – Through Net Banking”

from the pop-up screen.

Here you will see the remaining list of steps you need to follow further to complete the e-verification process through net banking. Read the steps carefully and press on

“Continue”

button.

Click on Continue

Step 10:

Select your bank from the list of banks through which you would like to go for Net Banking.

Follow the list of steps mentioned in

“Step 8”

to complete the e-verification of ITR through net banking.

Congratulations!

You have successfully completed e-verification of your ITR.

D) E-verification of ITR by Generating EVC using ATM

You can also generate EVC to e-verify your ITR using your ATM card. You can use this option if you have ATM card of a PAN validated account in any of banks registered with Income Tax Department.

Follow these simple steps given below to e-verify your ITR:

Step 1:

Swipe your debit / credit card only on your bank’s ATM

Step 2:

Choose option

"Generate EVC for Income tax Filing"

on the screen. An EVC will be generated and sent to your registered mobile number. Use this EVC within 72 hours to e-verify your ITR.

Step 4:

Find

“Login Here”

button on the top right corner and click on it to login to your account. If you do not have an account, you can click on

“Register Yourself”

Verify your ITR by keying in the 10 digit alpha numeric EVC in the space provided and press

E) Online Verification of ITR by Generating EVC Using Bank Account Details

Using this option you can now generate EVC using the basic details like bank account number, IFSC, email address and mobile number registered with the bank, PAN and name as used for filing returns.

Follow the steps given below to e-verify ITR using this method:

Step 1:

Click here to visit ITD’s e-filing website.

Step 2:

Find

“Login Here”

button on the top right corner and click on it to login to your account. If you do not have an account, you can click on

“Register Yourself”

button present just above

“Login Here”.

Step 3:

After logging in, select the 6th option on the main blue menu bar titled

“Profile Setting”.

Step 4:

Go to the option

“Update Bank Account details”.

Step 5:

Click on

“Generate EVC using Bank Account details ”

while verifying returns.

Step 6:

Check your registered email address or registered mobile number and find the 10-digit alpha-numeric E-verification code sent to you.

Step 7:

Enter the EVC and E-verify returns within 72 hours of generation.

F) E-verification of ITR by Generating EVC using Demat Account Details

Under this option you can generate EVC using your demat Account Number, registered email address, registered mobile number, PAN and name as used to file returns.

Follow the steps given below to e-verify ITR using this method:

Step 2:

Find

“Login Here”

button on the top right corner and click on it to login to your account. If you do not have an account, you can click on

“Register Yourself”

“Update Demat Account Details”

“Generate EVC using Demat Account details”

Check your registered email address or registered mobile number and find the 10-digit alpha-numeric E-verification code sent to you.

Step 7:

Enter the EVC and E-verify returns within 72 hours of generation.
