Application Process & Uses of e-PAN Card

e-PAN is nothing but the electronic version of digitally signed PAN card. It is as valid as a tangible PAN card. To get an e-PAN, you need a valid Aadhaar. e-PAN serves as a useful alternative for ordinary PAN card as it eliminates the need to carry the latter. The e-PAN card serves the following purposes:

  1. It acts as your identity proof.
  2. It serves as a tool for the government to track your financial transactions.


Having a PAN card gives you the following benefits:

  1. It helps in making payments of Direct Taxes
  2. It helps in filing of Income Tax returns
  3. It allows you to get into specific transactions:
    • In the case of sale or purchase of immovable assets worth Rs 5 lakh or more
    • In the case of sale or purchase of a vehicle excluding a two-wheeler
    • In the case of payments exceeding Rs 25,000 made to hotels or restaurants
    • In the case of payments exceeding Rs 25,000 concerning travel abroad
    • In the case of payment equal to or exceeding Rs 50,000 made to Reserve Bank for bonds
    • In the case of payment equal to or exceeding Rs 50,000 made to a company or institution to take possession of bonds and debentures
    • In the case of payment equal to or exceeding Rs 50,000 to a company to get shares
    • In the case of acquiring any mutual fund
    • In the case of payment exceeding Rs 5 lakh to acquire bullion or jewellery


Who can apply?

  1. You should be a Resident individual of India.
  2. You should have a valid Aadhaar card to obtain e-PAN.
  3. You should be 18 years or above.
  4. You should have an active mobile number which is linked with Aadhaar.
  5. You need to have current and true details in your Aadhaar card.

Who cannot apply?

  1. Minors cannot apply for e-PAN.
  2. People u/s 160 of the Income Tax Act (Hindu Undivided Family, company, firm, trusts) are ineligible.


  1. The head of the Hindu Undivided Family can apply for e-PAN in place of his family by giving valid Aadhaars of all the members of his family.
  2. A minor can get an E-PAN if his parents/ guardians provide their valid Aadhaar proof on his behalf.
  3. If you are residing abroad, you will have to produce a copy of your bank account statement in the present country where he is residing at his address proof.
  4. A mentally disabled person can get an E-PAN through a representative on his behalf by giving a valid Aadhaar proof.

Documents Required

You are required to produce the following documents when applying for an e-PAN card:

  1. Valid information in Aadhar card.
  2. Scanned copy of your signature
    1. Resolution – 200 DPI
    2. File type – JPEG of 10 KB
    3. Dimension – 2×4.5 cm

Application Process

Step 1: Go to the Income Tax Department’s e-filing website (1) and log in to your account.

Step 2: Click on “instant e-PAN”.

A page appears explaining the instructions to apply for E-PAN. Take a glance at the instructions.

Step 3: Click on the “Next” button.


Step 4: Enter all the details as mentioned in your Aadhaar card.

Step 5: After checking the acknowledgement box, click on the “Submit” button.


Step 6: Upload the scanned copy of your signature in a blank paper. It should meet the following requirements:

  • Resolution – 200 DPI
  • File type – JPEG of 10 KB
  • Dimension – 2 x 4.5 cm

After entering appropriate details, you will receive a 15-digit acknowledgement number to your registered mobile number.

Step 7: After the E-PAN is allotted, you will receive an alert by SMS or an e-mail.

Checking e-PAN Application Status

Step 1: In order to check e-PAN application, click on “Check instant e-PAN Status”.

Step 2: Enter your acknowledgement number. Your status will be displayed.

How to Download e-PAN?

You can download the E-PAN once it is sent to your registered e-mail ID after successful application, or you can download the e-PAN by following the steps given below:

  • Step-1: Visit the e-filing portal
  • Step-2: Click on the “Instant e-PAN” link
  • Step-3: Click on “Check instant e-PAN Status”
  • Step-4: Enter the acknowledgement number received on your mobile or e-mail
  • Step-5: Download your E-PAN

Uses of e-PAN

  1. Identity proof: It is an important document as you can use it as an identity proof wherever needed.
  2. Opening a bank statement: You can open a bank account except for Time Deposit using E-PAN.
  3. Making transactions: It is necessary to produce an E-PAN for transactions exceeding Rs 50,000.
  4. Purchase/ sale of vehicles: You need an E-PAN to purchase or sell a vehicle except for any two-wheeled vehicle.
  5. Filing Income Tax Returns: You can only file an Income Tax Return if you have an E-PAN.
  6. Issuance of credit card: You need to have an E-PAN to apply for a credit card.

A. Yes, an agent can fill the application on behalf of an individual. As the application form is filled online, the agent just needs the signature and Aadhaar card of the individual.
