Ration card is a document of identity issued by the State Governments of India so that people can obtain food grains, fuel and other basic amenities at a subsidized rate at various Public Distribution Shops (PDS), commonly known as Ration Shops. Due to lack of technology and inefficient government systems, there are millions of ineligible and fraudulent Ration cards. And at the same time, there are millions of poor families who do not have Ration cards.
Aadhaar Card has a 12-digit Unique Identification Number (UIN) which also possesses the biometric information of the individual eliminating the chances of duplication and multiple identities. As a matter of fact that Aadhaar is also being linked to one’s PAN card which tracks the financial transactions of an individual, it becomes easy for the government to determine his income and whether it is below or above the threshold limit for obtaining subsidized ration.
To put an end to obtaining multiple Ration cards which deprive the deserving individuals and stopping ones who are ineligible for subsidized ration (basic amenities), the government has made it mandatory to link the Ration card with the Aadhaar card. This will ensure proper delivery of ration to the ones who are in need.
By linking Aadhaar with Ration, the government has been able to weed out around 2.75 Crore duplicate and bogus Ration Cards and has made 82% linking of both. Still, about 18% – 20% are yet to link their Ration with Aadhaar. In a nutshell, it will soon be mandated to link all other government identities and documents with the Aadhaar card in order to avoid multiple and bogus identities.
