How to link Aadhaar with Ration Card?

The government has been continuously urging to link Aadhaar with various other identity proofs namely PAN, Driving license, Bank Accounts, etc. Ration card is the oldest proof of identity is also on the list. The main objective is to avoid the issuance of duplicate and multiple identities by digitizing it and also to streamline the benefits attached to it. Let us learn how to link ration card with Aadhaar.

Why do you need to link ration card with aadhaar?

To put an end to obtaining multiple Ration cards which deprive the deserving individuals and stopping ones who are ineligible for subsidized ration (basic amenities), the government has made it mandatory to link the Ration card with the Aadhaar card. This will ensure proper delivery of ration to the ones who are in need.

Steps for Ration Card Aadhaar Linking  – Online Method

  • Step 1: Visit the Aadhaar Portal (1)

  • Step 2: Click on ‘Start Now’.
  • Step 3: Fill the required fields such as the address.
  • Step 4: Select ‘Ration Card’ option from benefit type, enter Ration card number, Aadhaar number, email address and mobile number. Press the ‘Submit’ button.

  • Step 5: An OTP (One Time Password) will be generated and received on the mobile number entered at the time of registration.
  • Step 6: On entering the OTP the application will be processed.
  • Step 7: On successful verification of the information provided, a notification will be received notifying about the Aadhaar card being linked to the Ration card.

Ration Card Aadhaar Link  – Offline Method

  • Step 1: The following documents need to be submitted at the nearest Ration office or a PDS (Public Distribution Shop) namely:
    • Copy of Aadhaar cards of all family members along with the originals for verification
    • Copy of Ration card
    • Copy of Bank Passbook (if Aadhaar not linked with the bank account)
    • Passport size photograph of the head of the family
  • Step 2: Once the documents are submitted and reaches the appropriate department, a notification will be received by an e-mail or SMS.
  • Step 3: On successful verification of the documents by the authorities, a notification will again be received in respect of successful linking of Aadhaar card with the Ration card.

How to Link Aadhaar with Ration Card by SMS

  • Step 1: Type “UID SEED <State Short Code> <Scheme/Program Short Code> <Scheme/Program ID> <Aadhaar Number>” and send it to “51969”. For example: UID SEED MH POSC 9876543 123456789012.
  • Step 2: Various notifications will be received notifying the receipt of the information, successful verification and successful linking of Aadhaar card with Ration card.

Impact of Linking Aadhaar Card with Ration Card

By linking Aadhaar with Ration, the government has been able to weed out around 2.75 Crore duplicate and bogus Ration Cards and has made 82% linking of both. Still, about 18% – 20% are yet to link their Ration with Aadhaar. In a nutshell, it will soon be mandated to link all other government identities and documents with the Aadhaar card in order to avoid multiple and bogus identities.
